Ready to lace up your skates?

Most of us showed up not knowing anyone, not sure if we were athletic enough, not sure if we’d make it past the first practice. Some of us hadn’t been on skates since we were kids. Some of us had never been on skates at all.

We’re still here. And the people who show up now become the people who stay.

Shasta Roller Derby is a skater-run league in Shasta County — meaning the same people who run this league are the ones lacing up next to you on Sunday mornings. There’s no separate staff, no front office. Just us, building something we actually want to be part of, and making room for the next person who wants in.

The New Skater Program is how that next person becomes one of us. It’s built in three steps so you know what’s next and you never have to figure it out alone:

1. Come meet us first. First Thursday of every month at Viking Skate Country during Adult Skate Night.
2. Block A — Learn to Skate. Skating foundations, no contact, no pressure.
3. Block B — Learn to Derby. Once you’ve got the skating down, we teach you the sport.

You don’t need to be fast. You don’t need to be fearless. You just need to show up.

Meet & Greet at Viking Skate Country

Every first Thursday during Adult Skate Night (7PM)

This is your introduction to Shasta. Come skate, meet league members, and get a feel for our community. We’ll chat, answer questions, and do a relaxed skating check so we know where you’re starting from. If you can stand, roll, and get up on skates, you’re ready for Block A.

Block A — Learn to Skate

Sundays · 9 AM · Redding Sports Park

Block A focuses on skating skills and confidence: balance, footwork, form, stops, and safe movement. It’s designed to give new skaters a solid foundation before introducing derby contact or strategy.

Block B — Learn to Derby

After completing and testing out of Block A, skaters move into Block B, where we cover the fundamentals of roller derby: contact, gameplay, rules, and basic strategy. Testing out of Block A ensures everyone enters this block with the skills needed to participate safely. At the end of Block B, skaters will also complete a test-out to be cleared for full-contact league practices and scrimmage environments.

GEAR & COSTS

We offer a limited loaner gear rental program to support new skaters as they get started. Once you join the league, monthly dues are $35, and we’ll guide you through getting your own gear and insurance when the time comes.
